Sebring fronted Sprite - 950 XHK

Geoff in 950 XHK at the Harewood Hilclimb in 1964

950 XHK is another example of a period modified Sprite using W&P's Sebring bodywork, and was owned by Geoff Hill between 1961 and 1965, during which time he converted it from a standard car. These great colour pictures have recently been rediscovered by Geoff in a box of transparencies. He says:

"The car was bought as a standard Sprite in 61, I think a 59 car. I started doing sprints and driving tests (autotests now) and won quite a few local events, I am sure some people will have known the SYCEC (South Yorkshire Car Enthusiasts Club). Eventally I supercharged it and modified the engine with a cam and special Healey head, fitted a close ratio Mk2 box and uprated the suspension while also fitting wires and front discs along with the Williams & Prichard Sebring bonnet ... I did most of the work myself both mechanical and fitting the bodywork. Only the repainting from the original Red to Jaguar Indigo Blue was done externally. No real recolection of dealings with W&P other than good service as you would expect....

I continued to do local events and did a few hill climbs, mostly Harewood as it was close to home I guess. One weekend while down in Wales I was invited by a friend of a friend to enter a couple of national driving test events, as he was a member of the Austin Healey Club Team. I managed to win one outright, as a result I was asked to join the three car team and for a couple of years we did quite well winning the Morgan 4/4 Trophy twice as I recall and usually one of us was at the top of the individual FTD board. The team was overseen by none other than Peter Browning.

I sold the car to a guy who had been chasing me for a months to buy it and as a result of finding a 3000 MK11A I finally relented. Four months later he wrote it off to much shedding of tears."

As can be seen above, it was easy to style your own "Sebring" Sprite. Geoff's car looks very handsome with what appears to be a works hardtop fitted, which is sufficiently close in style to W&P's GRP Sebring hardtop to give a very similar overall look.

Geoff has had an interest in interesting Sprites over the years, and also used to own a WSM Sprite.

Thanks to Geoff for sharing his text and original photos from the 60s, and to Tony Wilson-Spratt for putting him in touch with the W&P Register.
