Bonneted Mk III Lenham Le Mans Sprite: HHV 481D

This car belongs to Rob Thomas and has a Lenham Le Mans fibreglass coupe back and a Sebring GT fibreglass front, complete with headlamp guards, built on a Mk III Sprite in the mid-nineties. The uncoloured glass fibre inside the bonnet and the missing cold air duct suggest that it is probably a Fibresports manufactured Sebring GT front from the mid 70's / early 80's - Rob has added his own stylish wavy moustach grill into the air intake - and yes, that is a plane on his driveway!

In Rob's own words:

"The GRP panels were on a shell that had been left to rot on a flood plain near Monmouth. There was so little steelwork left that I peeled the Lenham roof off the old shell without it cracking. I guess it had sat under water for months, if not years. It was green when I got it home but clear/white after it was washed. I found a new shell in a garage in Abercynon that was being built up with heritage panels. The tunnel was the only original part left from the door hinges backwards and it had no outer panels. Perfect!. It was on a rolling 'spit' with locating points to 'jig' the entire new rear end onto the rebuilt floorpan. Unfortunately, the jig must've become a bit bent during transportation!! About an inch error had to be repaired. The mechanicals came from LYD6L which was my first (prototype) Lancia twin-cam engined, 5-speed Midget. The dashboard has now graced 6 different project cars. HHV now has Frontline units all round, 8 inch rear brakes, standard Midget front brakes (after the 10.25 inch AP Racing brakes proved to be a little too harsh). The engine came from a 'divorce sale', as did the wheels and split 45 weber carbs. The differences between HHV and some others I have seen...... 1. HHV still has the 'butresses' from rearmost spring hanger to the top of the B-post. The normal practice is to remove this panel and to replace it with a GRP sheet 2. HHV has a channel under the window sill that mirrors the flat section below the Tenax fasteners on a late Midget. Some are smooth here. 3. HHV has the front roof clips moulded into the front rail of the roof structure. I've also added a drip channel to catch rain and to keep it from pouring through the top of the glass."

Many thanks to Rob for use of his original photographs and text.
