the Nomad Mk I, at Rye in March 1967, with body fresh from W&P's works |
The Nomad was a GT car designed by Bob Curl, an ex-Lotus employee, for Mark Konig, the well known Lotus Elite and Elan racer. After leaving Lotus, Bob had set up his own business tuning and servicing racing Elans, but had a secret passion to design his own race car. Mark came across some wooden models that Bob had produced in the back of his workshop, and Mark was intrigued. They decided they should go ahead with the best design, and create a car for Group 6 prototype endurance racing. Starting in the autumn of 1966, a spaceframe chassis was formed with a Lotus based suspension set-up.
Over the winter of '66 / '67, the gorgeous alloy body was built by W&P in 18 gauge aluminium. It was created straight from Bob Curl's model by eye, and is a thing of real beauty. The car was fitted initially with a Ford 1600 twin-cam engine mated to a Hewland Mark 5 gearbox. The car gained its name "Nomad" thanks to a comment by Mark's wife Gabriel about the Konig's looking like nomads when they went racing with their caravan of gear about them. Gabriel Konig was a legendary and fearless Sprite racer, who raced Sebring Sprites and dominated her series as stablemate to John Britten of Lenham and Arkley fame.

There then followed two seasons of endurance racing at some of the top long distances races of the period in the 1600cc prototype class. This included the 'Ring, Mugello, Reims, Daytona 24hrs, Targa Florio, and Imola. Mark's regular co-driver on some of these events was Tony Lanfranchi. In late 1967 to lighten the bodywork further, the alloy front, doors and rear engine cover were replaced with fibreglass, and by August 1968, the engine had been upgraded to a BRM V8. This brought about improved results. At the end of the '68 season, Mark decided a revised car might be more competitive, and a Mk II was born, being an open spider version that was bodied in-house in ultra light GRP by the Nomad team, with cars available for sale. The original Nomad had three more outings in 1969 in the hands of Peter Jackson but was becoming uncompetitive and was pensioned off. |

The Nomad Mk I survives in fine condition in Germany. Its current owner Wolfgang Wegener says:
"By chance I came accross your website. The Nomad 1 had a body build by Williams & Pritchard in 1967 - straight from a wooden model supplied by Bob Curl (the designer). The car raced in the long distance sports car races in 1967, '68 and '69. Notably the Targa Florio (twice), 1000 km Monthlery/Paris (twice), 24 hours of Daytona, 1000 and 500 km Nürburgring (twice), BOAC 500, 12 hours Reims, etc. Driven at the time by Mark Konig and Tony Lanfranchi. The Nomad is here in Germany with me now for over 20 years. Sadly, the aluminium front and the rear bonnet were replaced with fibreglass ones already in 1968 - but otherwise the car is accident free and in very good condition." |
