Over the years of W&P's output, they worked with most of the contemporary vehicle designers and builders at work in Britain, and were instrumental in the creation of many specialist top-end sports and race cars. This is not surprising given their prominence in the North London engineering community and their relationship with Lotus, which opened doors to all sorts of contacts. Patrons included: Shelby, Lotus, Cooper, Lister, Lola, Gordon Keeble, Austin Healey, AC, BRM, Marcos, Panther Westwinds and a whole host of specialist race body and prototype work for some of the greatest names of mid-twentieth century British sports and race car design including amongst others Chapman, Costin, Kirwan-Taylor, Tojeiro, Lister, Lawrence, Sprinzel, Willment, Wingfield and Humberstone.
The importance of some of the cars they bodied cannot be underestimated including two record breakers (Lotus XI Monza and Speedwell Sprite), Formula 1, Formula 2 and endurance cars raced by the biggest names of the period, and prototypes for some iconic luxury sports cars of the sixties. The Register aims over time to document all of these, and wherever possible to publish material about these cars on this website as a central resource, but we are very reliant on those with knowledge and with surviving cars to share it. There is a surviving archive of W&P company material which is a wonderful resource, but it is distinctly patchy in places, so please contact us with your stories.
We have started a definitive list of W&P work shortly, covering every project they were involved in from 1948 to 1989, which we anticipate to be a work in progress over several years. All material published is painstakingly researched against period evidence before publication, and we try to go "straight to the horses mouth" wherever possible to speak to those connected with the project at the time. We also seek copyright clearances where applicable. As you will appreciate, this can take some time, and at any given point the Register may have up to five cars under research.
In early 2010, we are currently researching RUM 2, the Jack Walton Bristol Cooper special; Ferrari 01C as bodied by W&P for John Willment in 1950; the Kirwan-Taylor Lotus 6; a mystery Costin project; and work for the Healeys. We are also interested in any information about Cooper bodies that W&P may have been involved in, including the Shelby King Cobra (based on the Monaco).
Please enjoy exploring and finding out more about W&P's prolific and diverse output in this area of the website. |
