MGB Hardtop - under restoration in Holland

This is the exceptionally rare Sebring GT hardtop for the MGB and belongs to Peter Lutgendorf in Holland. He purchased it in Germany a few years ago, and it is shown above and below on the previous owner's car.

Peter is in the process of restoring the hardtop and an MGB (which will be sprayed black tulip shortly) and is keen for any information as to the fixtures and fittings, and in particular a series of hooks on the underside.

Peter's hardtop was manufactured by Fibresports from the original W&P moulds between 1973 and the late 80's when the moulds were destroyed. The boot lid currently sports a Fibresports sticker which is very different from the W&P "SEBRING" badging.

If you currently or historically have ever owned one of these hardtops, or can shed any light on their fixtures and fittings, please email us using the link on the left.

We look forward to welcoming Peter's fully restored car to the Register in due course and hope to add some photos of the finished product shortly.

In Peter's own words:

"On the mountings: the hardtop is at the paintshop now and I do not have access right now to take any pictures. On the back the only information I have is that there are on each side in the gutter of the hardtop two holes on top of each other app. 2 inches apart. I can imagine that some kind of bracket would be fitted with them that would hook under the trunk edge. That is at least how I would try to mount it if the original way can not be found. At the bottom of the door post (B pillar) at each side of the hard top is just a small hook, pointing upwards as if something from below would pull it down, which could be some kind of bracket that would be mounted in the same holes as for the frame of the vinyl soft top.

The quality (of the fibreglass) was very bad indeed. Many air bubbles under the outer gelcoat layer which usually means careless processing, sharp and rough edges, etc. Nothing serious though if you are going to spray it anyhow. The hardtop was also broken on one side, at the rear corner of one of the side windows. A weak spot by nature, particularly when the limited thickness of the window frame at this spot mainly consists of brittle gelcoat and hardly any fibres. I repaired it by laminating in of a thick nail. Of course you will get a picture for your register when the car is ready. I can not wait to be able to take one! The picture in the brochure of the, also dark coloured, MGB with such a hardtop gives already an impression. Looks good! Because it has the same height and same styling of the front edge as the soft top the car will look lower, as compared to an MGB with the original factory hard top which is higher then the soft top."

Many thanks to Peter for the use of his photographs and text.
