MGB Sebring GT Hardtop

above: W&P advertising flyer from the company archives

This is the exceptionally rare Sebring GT hardtop for the MGB and belongs to Peter Lutgendorf in Holland. He purchased it in Germany a few years ago, as shown below on the previous owner's car.
Peter has recently completed restoration of the hardtop and his MGB, and is keen for any information as to the fixtures and fittings, and in particular a series of hooks on the underside.
Peter's hardtop was manufactured by Fibresports from the original W&P moulds between 1973 and the late 80's when the moulds were destroyed. The boot lid currently sports a Fibresports sticker which is very different from the W&P "SEBRING" badging. Peter has gone to extraordinary lengths to have the Fibresports sticker recreated in the original gold which Steve Foster of Fibresports used on dark coloured tops in the seventies.
If you currently or historically have ever owned one of these hardtops, or can shed any light on their fixtures and fittings, please email us using the link on the left.
In Peter's own words:
"On the mountings: the hardtop is at the paintshop now and I do not have access right now to take any pictures. On the back the only information I have is that there are on each side in the gutter of the hardtop two holes on top of each other app. 2 inches apart. I can imagine that some kind of bracket would be fitted with them that would hook under the trunk edge. That is at least how I would try to mount it if the original way can not be found. At the bottom of the door post (B pillar) at each side of the hard top is just a small hook, pointing upwards as if something from below would pull it down, which could be some kind of bracket that would be mounted in the same holes as for the frame of the vinyl soft top.
The quality (of the fibreglass) was very bad indeed. Many air bubbles under the outer gelcoat layer which usually means careless processing, sharp and rough edges, etc. Nothing serious though if you are going to spray it anyhow. The hardtop was also broken on one side, at the rear corner of one of the side windows. A weak spot by nature, particularly when the limited thickness of the window frame at this spot mainly consists of brittle gelcoat and hardly any fibres. I repaired it by laminating in of a thick nail ... Looks good! Because it has the same height and same styling of the front edge as the soft top the car will look lower, as compared to an MGB with the original factory hard top which is higher then the soft top.
I can share a detail about the
label at the back. At first I had a black one made, as the original on the
teal blue hard top as I bought it. But that didn't show up at all on a
black tulip car! Then I asked Fibresports what they used for sticker color
on a very dark car. Their answer was: gold! Shows up nice I think on the
dark purple. I can get more stickers if you want, will cost approx. 15 euro per
sticker."
Many thanks to Peter for the use of his photographs and text. If you want a Fibresports sticker, contact us and we will put you in touch with Peter.

Other Sebring GT hardtops known to the Register
In October 2009, there are known to survive at least 3 other Sebring GT hardtops for the MGB, currently not fitted to cars.
